IDE and Editor Recommendations for Developers

The IDEs and editors you use have a big effect on your speed. Which one should you pick for which job?

One of the biggest factors affecting your speed as a developer is the IDEs and editors you use. Depending on your IDE or editor, you can end up slower, or it can hold you back, so in this article I'll list several useful editors. Let's get started.

Visual Studio 2020

It supports many languages, so it's a good choice for handling many projects from one IDE. In my opinion, though, its rich set of platforms makes it heavy and slow in some cases.

NotePad++

Much like a plain notepad, Notepad++ is a very simple editor with a tiny download size. It supports languages such as PHP, HTML, CSS, JS, Java, C and C++.

Sublime Text 3

It has the same features as Notepad++, but its dark design and folder tree make it easier on the eye.

PhpStorm

PhpStorm comes from a big company that also makes many other IDEs and editors. If you work on projects like websites, PhpStorm is just right for you: it supports JS, PHP, CSS, HTML and many more languages, and it can connect to GitHub. However, unless you are a university student, it is a paid program.

Adobe Dreamweaver

This editor supports many languages such as HTML, CSS and JS and can be useful for website design.

That's 7 IDEs and editors in total. I've used most of them and recommend them; if you don't like them, there are plenty of other IDEs to choose from :)
